【Nasal Care】How to Keep Your Nose Moist in Dry, Air-Conditioned Rooms During Summer

The Impact of Dry Environments on Your Nose
To keep things cool, air conditioners and airplane cabins lower the moisture in the air. Studies show that spending too much time in very dry air can bother the lining of your nose. A healthy layer of nasal mucus needs to be over 96% water. This helps the "mucociliary clearance system" work smoothly to sweep away inhaled germs and dust. When the air is too dry, the moisture in your nose dries up quickly. Also, being in cold, dry places causes your nose to lose more of its surface cells. To make up for this lost water, your body reacts by widening tiny blood vessels and making the nose tissue swell. It also makes mucus that is far too thick. This is the main reason why your nose feels tight, blocked, crusty, or hard to breathe through in dry places (Source: PubMed, PMID 16750997).
The Role of Advanced Nasal Sprays
To fix nose discomfort caused by dry air, it is important to use a moisturizing nasal spray when needed. In recent years, advanced sprays often add ingredients like PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone) and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to work better. PVP is a safe, water-based material that works well with the body and easily sticks to the inside of the nose. It quickly mixes with mucus to form an even, protective water-gel shield on the surface. This shield keeps moisture in the nose for much longer and soothes the tissue. It also stops airborne dust and allergens from irritating damaged cells (Source: Vistartglobal).
How Baking Soda Helps
Furthermore, mucus that is too thick makes it hard for the tiny hair-like structures (cilia) in your nose to move. Baking soda is great at breaking down mucus. It softens and thins out thick snot, helping the cilia sweep waste out of the body. At the same time, baking soda acts as a mild buffer to keep the spray's pH levels steady. Adding baking soda also balances and reduces the sting of salt water, making the spray feel much gentler (Sources: Medical News Today / Clinical ENT Guidelines).
Tips for Better Airway Health
When you are in air-conditioned rooms, we recommend using a humidifier to keep the indoor humidity between 50% and 60%. If you need to stay in a dry place, like an airplane cabin, for a long time, use a nasal spray with PVP and baking soda to add moisture and build a protective shield. Finally, keeping air vents and filters clean will reduce the build-up of airborne irritants right from the start, fully protecting your airway health.
