【Nasal Care】Nasal Rinse with Sodium Bicarbonate May Help COVID-19 Patients Recover Faster
Nasal rinsing is often used for allergies or sinus care, but new research suggests it may also play a role in the fight against COVID-19. A study published in Frontiers in Public Health (March 2023) found that using a 5% sodium bicarbonate solution for nasal irrigation could help patients clear the virus more quickly.

The study involved 55 patients with mild to moderate COVID-19, divided into two groups. The control group received standard medical care, while the experimental group received the same care plus sodium bicarbonate nasal rinses. Both groups were similar in age, gender, and overall health, ensuring reliable comparisons.
Results showed that the group using sodium bicarbonate rinses turned negative for the virus in just 1.63 days on average, much faster than the control group. Hospital stays were also shorter—7.7 days compared to 12.53 days without nasal rinsing. Researchers explained that SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, is less infectious in alkaline environments, which may explain the positive outcome.
Although more research is needed, sodium bicarbonate nasal rinsing offers a low-cost, safe, and accessible option that could support recovery and reduce the strain on healthcare systems. For patients with COVID-19, a simple nasal rinse might prove to be an effective complementary therapy.
