【Nasal Care】Nasal Sprays Show Promise in Reducing Duration of Respiratory Infections, Landmark UK Study Finds
A major study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine (August 2024) has revealed that simple nasal sprays may help reduce the duration and severity of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) when used at the first signs of illness.

Conducted across 332 primary care practices in the UK and involving 13,799 participants, this is the largest trial to date assessing preventive and early interventions for respiratory infections in community healthcare. The study compared conventional treatment with two nasal spray options—saline solution spray and gel-based spray—administered at the onset of respiratory symptoms.
The findings were clear: both types of nasal sprays shortened the illness by an average of three days compared to routine care. They also reduced symptom intensity and significantly lowered the use of antibiotics. Researchers noted that the benefit largely came from washing the nasopharyngeal area, which reduced viral load and helped the body recover faster.
Experts recommend that nasal sprays be used as soon as early symptoms appear. If widely adopted, this low-cost, easy-to-use intervention could play a crucial role in antibiotic stewardship, helping to reduce unnecessary prescriptions while easing the burden of viral respiratory diseases on patients, healthcare systems, and the broader economy.
