【Mucosa Care】Rethinking Care for Hemorrhoids and Anal Fissures: From Emergency Relief to Long-term Barrier Protection

In modern daily life, hemorrhoids and anal fissures have become highly prevalent health concerns. Most patients instinctively turn to potent medications during a flare-up, often overlooking the long-term maintenance of mucosal health. Recently, a new perspective has emerged in the medical community: effective care should go beyond mere pain relief and focus instead on "physical protection" by rebuilding the mucosal barrier. This represents a fundamental change in thinking—moving away from constant pharmacological intervention toward supporting natural tissue repair.

Traditional medicated ointments are often viewed as "first responders." Their primary ingredients usually include steroids and local anesthetics, which can rapidly suppress acute inflammation and temporarily block pain. For patients at the peak of redness, swelling, and itching, these provide immediate relief. However, research indicates that prolonged steroid use can inhibit tissue repair, causing the perianal skin to become thin, atrophied, and fragile, making it prone to re-injury from even slight friction. Consequently, these medications are strictly intended for "short-term control." Medical experts generally advise against using them for more than seven days to avoid rebound dermatitis or irreversible tissue damage.

Physical barrier gels, on the other hand, serve as a "protective moat." Gels such as Mucosa Liquid Bandage utilize polymer film-forming technology or hyaluronic acid to create an adhesive "liquid bandage" over the damaged mucosa. This transparent film provides physical isolation, reducing friction during bowel movements and, more importantly, blocking irritation from bacteria, digestive enzymes, and bile found in stool. Because these gels are non-pharmacological and possess a high safety profile, they are particularly suitable for pregnant women, the elderly, or those managing chronic anal fissures over the long term.

An ideal modern care strategy should be managed in stages: during the first few days of acute swelling and pain, use medication as a temporary "firefighting" measure; once the redness and swelling subside, immediately transition to a barrier gel for long-term "maintenance." This approach harnesses the strengths of medication while avoiding its long-term side effects. Healthcare should return to supporting the body’s original functions without over-intervention, allowing the body to rediscover its self-healing power through the help of a physical barrier.
